This marks a major milestone for the local anime community, bringing one of Japan’s most popular franchises directly to the big screen. It’s coming on it’s international premier day no less. This is a big fan for anime fans locally. Ster Kinekor Zimbabwe announced this today, 9 September 2026, just 3 days before the international cinema release date.
Set in the Taishō era, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba follows Tanjiro Kamado and the Demon Slayer Corps as they battle powerful demons with breathtaking sword techniques and heartfelt determination. The news comes hot on the heels of the largest Otakukon Anime Festival (OKAF) yet, which drew record crowds in Harare on the 24th of August. The event was a cultural landmark, with recognition and support from the Embassy of Japan in Zimbabwe, JICA, and the Study in Japan for Africa Program, highlighting the growing significance of anime, manga, and Japanese pop culture in Zimbabwe. This included the continent’s first ever competitive cosplay competition that fused Anime characters and African traditional wear.
