We have continuously offered our Cosplay tickets at 50% of the cost of our on the day tickets. We believe this has been a major motivator for our community to come in cosplay.

Benefits of attending in Cosplay

• Cosplay is a great conversation starter. When you dress up, you announce what you enjoy watching or reading and that always helps others like you gravitate towards you. So if you struggle to start conversations with strangers, wear cosplay and the conversations will come to you.
• You get to express yourself creatively. This can be through the process of making your cosplay or by making a cosplay that is a divergent take on a character from your favourite shows.

The benefits of attending in cosplay are insane. The biggest thing is that it’s a lot of fun. Coming off the OTAKUKON events, Cosplay Zw our media partner opened a WhatsApp group that has been growing. It is a great community where cosplay discussions ensure, anime recommendations come in and people share where they get their crafting materials. The home of Zimbabwean cosplay will be created both digitally and physically.

How Much has Cosplaying Grown in Zimbabwe

2023 was a great year for the growth of the anime, manga, cosplay and gaming communities within Zimbabwe. While our first event had just 20 cosplayers in total, we saw a totally different picture at the final event of the year. December 22nd 2023, was the day we held Zimbabwe’s first ever full day anime convention. We had held 3 AMN events before December and we were keen to see how much the cosplay community had changed in that space of time.

The quality and quantity of cosplays at OTAKUKON 2023 was heartwarming. The casual and DIY cosplay segments were the most active with so many people making an effort. What we love about cosplay is also how much it shows how much our community is growing from an anime viewership perspective. While it was definitely JJK season with the most cosplays comin from the acclaimed and amazing Jujutsu kaisen anime.

The OTAKUKON eSports Program is an exciting development for the gaming community in Zimbabwe. With the rise of eSports around the world, it’s great to see Zimbabwe joining in on the action. The monthly invitationals will provide a platform for local gamers to showcase their skills and compete against each other in a professional setting. The round robin and tournament structure of the events will ensure that gamers have plenty of opportunities to earn points and secure their spot at the OTAKUKON eSports finals.

The launch of the OTAKUKON eSports Program has been set aside to be a 3 step process. The first stage is the creation of a database of all eSports athletes in Zimbabwe, allowing them to register and be acknowledge as part of the this professional network. This directory is readily available on the OTAKUKON website and serves as proof of athletes plating competitively. The second stage has been the actual creation of leagues for different games. As it stands, leagues now exist for Zimbabwean players of Mortal Kombat, Tekken &, Street Fighter 6 and Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 each with a leaderboard available online. With Zimbabwean early adopters attending the OTAKUKON eSports Winter Invitational held on the 22nd of July at Moto Republik in Harare, we have already seen gamers start taking top spots. The final stage of this launch is the creation of OTAKUKON’s biggest eSports event of the year which will be done at OTAKUKON 2023.

“Gaming has been on the rise in Zimbabwe with an increase in console sales and small tournaments across the country. What has been missing to help Zimbabwe cross the threshold into professional gaming is an eSports League,” says Archie Moyo the founder and Event Director for OTAKUKON. According to the OTAKUKON page about the eSports invitationals, these events will be held as full day events monthly. Ideally OTAKUKON hopes to host these events on a fortnightly basis as this would certainly help gamers improve by offering more chances to play together and learn from each other. The first half of each invitational event will be a league based round robin where all players in groups get to play each other for accumulation of points. The second half of the day is then taken up by knockout tournaments for each of the games; with the top 8 or 16 players qualifying for this stage. The points accumulated by games will increase exceedingly increase once players are in the knockout tournament stage, this works well to reward the players performing the best.

The OTAKUKON eSports finals, which will be held at OTAKUKON 2023 on the 22nd of December 2023, promises to be an exciting event. With the best gamers from around Zimbabwe competing for the title, it’s sure to be a nail-biting finish. The event will also provide an opportunity for gamers to meet and network with each other, as well as with industry professionals.

Do’s for Attending First Anime Con

Do plan ahead. Check the convention website for the schedule, map, rules, guests and other information. Make a list of the events and activities you want to attend and prioritize them. Also plan transportation and logistics in advance if possible. Pack your essentials such as ID, tickets, money, phone charger, snacks, water. Ensure that you have cash in multiple payment options as that can help as not all stalls will accept all payment models.

Do cosplay safely. If you decide to cosplay, make sure your costume is comfortable, durable and appropriate for the convention. Follow the cosplay rules and regulations of the convention, especially regarding weapons and props. Bring a cosplay emergency kit with items like bobby pins, safety pins, glue, scissors, etc. to fix any malfunctions. Ask for help if you need it.

Do respect others. Anime conventions are all about celebrating fandom and having fun with others who share your passion. Be polite and courteous to everyone you meet, including staff, guests, vendors and fellow attendees. Ask for permission before taking photos or videos of cosplayers or celebrities. Don’t touch anyone without their consent. Don’t harass or bully anyone for their appearance, preferences or opinions.

Do stay healthy. Anime conventions can be physically and mentally draining, so it’s important to take care of yourself. Follow the 6-2-1 rule: get at least 6 hours of sleep, 2 meals and 1 shower per day. Stay hydrated and eat nutritious food. Take breaks when you feel tired or overwhelmed. Wash your hands frequently and use sanitizer to avoid germs. Make sure to get some rest between events.

Don’ts for Attending your First Anime Convention in Zimbabwe

Don’t forget your badge. Your badge is your ticket to enter the convention and access all the events and activities. Keep it with you at all times and don’t lose it or lend it to anyone else. If you lose your badge, report it to the registration desk as soon as possible.

Don’t overspend. Anime conventions can be tempting places to splurge on all kinds of merchandise, but be careful not to go over your budget. Set a limit on how much you can spend and stick to it. Compare prices before buying anything and look for discounts or deals on the last day of the convention. Always bring cash as some vendors may not accept cards or other payment methods.

Don’t be rude or disruptive. Anime conventions are meant to be enjoyable for everyone, so don’t ruin it for others by being rude or disruptive. Don’t cut in line, block the hallways, talk loudly during panels or screenings, litter or vandalize the venue or property. Follow the instructions of the staff and security and cooperate with them if they ask you to do something.

Don’t forget to have fun! Anime conventions are a great opportunity to express yourself, make new friends, learn new things and have a blast. Don’t let stress, anxiety or negativity get in the way of your enjoyment. Be open-minded, adventurous and positive. Try new things, explore different aspects of fandom and culture and appreciate the diversity and creativity of the anime community.

Otaku Peddler was founded by Archie Moyo, who wanted to create something unique and fun for the Zimbabwean otaku market. He started was because he couldn’t find any anime merch locally and ordering into Zimbabwe was impossible. While the anime market was very small then, Archie thought creating the merch would definitely scratch an itch in Zimbabwe. The discounted group tickets are available in two versions: a 5-person ticket and a 10-person ticket. The 5-person ticket, dubbed the Nakama Ticket costs $30 and allows entry for five people to the convention. The 10-person ticket, aptly named the Pirate Crew Ticket costs $50 and allows entry for ten people to the convention. These tickets offer a great saving compared to the regular individual ticket price of $8. However, the best part is that the attendees will still enjoy the full benefits of full priced ticket.

The discounted group tickets will first be released for OTAKUKON’s half-day mini con called “Anime, Merch & Nakama.” This event will take place on June 25 at the Green Screen outdoor cinema in Mount Pleasant. While comic books are mostly associated with countries like Japan and the United States, where they have a large and established industry and fan base, they are also emerging in other parts of the world, including Africa. In particular, Zimbabwe has become a hub for comic book creation and innovation. Bill Masuku created Razor-Man, a superhero comic that featured a Zimbabwean journalist who gained superpowers after being exposed to a mysterious meteorite¹. Razor-Man was one of the first locally produced comic books that gained popularity and recognition among Zimbabwean readers.

The Challenges of Comic Book Creation in Zimbabwe

For example, Comexposed is a collective of artists, designers, and animators that was founded in 2013 by Eugene Ramirez Mapondera and Tinodiwa Zambe Makoni. Comexposed organizes events such as conventions, workshops, exhibitions, and competitions that showcase local comic books and related merchandise¹. Comexposed also provides training and mentorship for aspiring comic book artists.
• Leveraging technology and social media. Comic book artists are using technology and social media to create and distribute their work more efficiently and effectively. For example, they are using digital tools such as tablets, laptops, software, scanners, and printers to produce high-quality comic books. They use online platforms such as websites, blogs, and social media to publish, market, and communicate with their readers and customers¹.
• Exploring new genres and themes. Comic book artists are experimenting with new genres and themes that reflect their creativity, culture, and vision. We see creation of comic books that feature African superheroes, fantasy worlds, historical events, and social issues. This appeals to both local and international audiences¹. Some examples of these comic books are Umzingeli, a bounty hunter working with the African Peacekeeping Force², Sunblast Red, a solar-powered superhero fighting crime in Harare¹, and Invader ZIM, a sci-fi comedy about an alien invader trying to conquer Earth³.

The Future of the Rise of Zimbabwean Comic Books

Comic books in Zimbabwe are on the rise and are becoming more popular and recognized among readers and fans. They are also becoming more diverse and original among creators and artists. They are creating a new form of visual literature that showcases the talent, culture, and vision of Zimbabweans.

However, comic books in Zimbabwe still have a long way to go. While they still face many challenges that hinder their growth and development. They still need more support and resources that enable their production and distribution. They still need more exposure and recognition that increase their appreciation and value.

Therefore, comic books in Zimbabwe need more collaboration and cooperation among all stakeholders involved in their industry. They need more involvement from the government, the private sector, the media, the education system, the civil society. This will provide them with funding, regulation, protection, publicity, training, etc., that they deserve. There is also need more engagement from the public, the readers, the fans, and customers. Creating channels for engagement will allow for feedback, demand loyalty, respect that they appreciate.

Being a person who lives in Zimbabwe, what you know most is the frustration and disappointment of not having any anime conventions in our country. You have to watch online videos or read blogs of other people’s experiences, or travel to other countries if you can afford it, to enjoy what other otakus take for granted. The other alternative is travelling to other countries around us that have been having conventions; South Africa or Zambia to name a few.

Well, not anymore. Because this year, Zimbabwe will host its first ever anime convention, thanks to the efforts of Otaku Konnect, a group of dedicated and enthusiastic fans who decided to make their dream a reality. The idea behind creating this anime convention for Zimbabwe is to increase events that Zimbabwean Otaku can attend and grow the community.

The convention, which is called Otakukon, will take place on 13 August 2023 at Reps Theatre in Belgravia, Harare. The first Otakukon will be a one-day, 8 hour event that will feature a variety of activities and attractions for anime and manga lovers of all ages and backgrounds.

Some of the highlights of the convention include:

• Panels and workshops with local, such as voice actors, cosplayers, artists, writers and experts on various topics related to anime and manga.
• Anime screenings, where you can watch the latest and classic anime titles on a big screen,
• Cosplay competitions, where you can showcase your costumes and performances on stage, or admire the amazing outfits and talents of other cosplayers.
• Artist alley and vendor hall, where you can buy or sell original artwork, prints, comics, crafts, clothing, accessories, figurines and other merchandise related to anime and manga.
• Gaming tournaments and karaoke, where you can challenge your friends or strangers to various video games or sing along to your favorite anime songs.
• And much more!

The convention is open to every Zimbabwean who loves anime and manga, whether you are a casual fan or a hardcore otaku. You don’t need to be an expert or a veteran to enjoy the convention. You just need to bring your enthusiasm and curiosity.

Anime in Zimbabwe has been seen to be growing, especially through the mushrooming of anime merch sellers in the past two years with more than 5 different merch sellers coming to the fore. Top of mind with anime merch is Otaku Peddler who focus on embroidered hoodies and sweaters and have branched into figurines and cosplay; AnimaniacZw who are most know for their accessories collection of rings, necklaces and bracelets while also doing cosplay; New leaf (formerly Atlas Gratis) who provide accessories, socks and other unique merch; and a few more (we should just make it a blog post).

Ticket prices will be shared in the following month and can be purchased online or at the door. However, if you buy them online in advance, you can get a discount and avoid long queues. You can also get special perks if you buy a VIP ticket or volunteer as a staff member.
