Harare, Zimbabwe — April 20, 2025
The atmosphere was electric, the crowd on edge, and the stakes higher than ever. After an intense two-day tournament filled with grit, combos, and clutch comebacks, Button Bash officially crowned its first-ever Mortal Kombat 1 champion — and it all came down to a legendary clash between Unknown T and Sonic. Both players had shown immense promise over the two days with Sonic a coming in from Winners bracket while Unknown T was coming from the losers bracket. This is despite Unknown T having won the last two local tournaments for Mortal Kombat 1.

The grand finals, held on the second day of Zimbabwe’s largest gaming convention, delivered everything you’d expect from a showdown of this magnitude: calculated spacing, brutal finishers, and jaw-dropping turnarounds. It was a battle not just of skill, but of endurance and mind games.

A New Era for Competitive Gaming in Zimbabwe

Button Bash has made history this year by hosting the largest prize pool per game in Zimbabwean esports — and Mortal Kombat 1 stood out as one of the most fiercely contested brackets. The prizes were a courtesy of a sponsorship from POSB bank, one of Zimbabwe’s oldest banking instititions. Both Unknown T and Sonic emerged from a double elimination bracket that tested the limits of timing, precision, and adaptability.

Unknown T’s composed playstyle and lethal punishes were matched blow-for-blow by Sonic’s aggressive reads and fast reactions. The crowd roared with every round taken, and the final moments had everyone on their feet.

More Than Just a Game

This victory marks a turning point for the Zimbabwean fighting game community. With official tournaments, live spectators, and professional broadcasting, Button Bash is proving that competitive gaming here is no longer underground — it’s becoming a scene of its own.

For players like Unknown T, this win isn’t just a trophy. It’s a symbol of what’s possible when passion, community, and opportunity come together.

Follow Otaku Konnect to stay updated on future events, tournaments, and highlights. Whether you’re a casual player or an aspiring esports star, Button Bash is where Zimbabwe’s next champions rise.

The Zimbabwe Manga and Comic Book Awards, presented by Otaku Konnect at Nakamarket, are set to spotlight the creative talent of Zimbabwean comic book artists and mangaka, giving fans a unique platform to celebrate and recognize exceptional work. Created to foster appreciation and growth within the local manga and comic book community, these awards not only highlight artistry but also aim to inspire creators to produce new content each year.

Hosted by Otaku Konnect, the organization responsible for hosting Zimbabwe’s first anime convention, OTAKUKON Anime Festival, these awards are set to become an annual fixture within the calendar, complementing the festival’s existing cosplay and gaming events. Set to debut at the upcoming Nakamarket event, the awards promise an exciting addition to the vibrant atmosphere Otakukon events are known for.

Awards Categories and Judging Criteria

The awards have four core categories: Best Comic Book, Best Manga, Best Cover Art, and Best Narrative or Storyline. Each category highlights different aspects of the creation process, from inking skills to storytelling ability, providing a well-rounded approach to evaluating talent in the industry. Categories like Best Cover Art and best Narrative or Storyline will allow comic book artists and mangaka to compete side by side, fostering a sense of community and healthy competition.

We appreciate that this is the first iteration of these awards despite Zimbabwe having a rich history comic books, that is older than 10 years. That being said, we will have two broader categories that nominations will fall into; Historic and New. Historic will allow for nominations of all comic books and Manga published before 1 January 2024 while the ‘New’ category will cater for all publications from this year (2024). Going forward

How the Nominations and Voting Work

These awards are fan-based.

In keeping with the fan-centric spirit of Otakukon, the awards will be entirely fan-voted. Artists can nominate themselves, or fans can nominate their favorite creators, opening the process up to everyone. During the nomination period, artists will have the opportunity to share links to their works on the nomination page, allowing the community to explore and discover new Zimbabwean manga and comic book content.

The nomination period will run from November 1st to November 30th, and voting will take place from December 1st to December 7th, just ahead of Nakamarket. This structure builds excitement, allowing ample time for fans to explore each artist’s work while keeping the voting period focused and engaging.

Encouraging Creativity and Growth

The Zimbabwe Manga and Comic Book Awards aim to uplift creators and inspire them to keep producing quality work, fostering a vibrant community around Zimbabwean manga and comics. As the awards become an annual tradition, they’ll offer an ongoing incentive for artists to produce new chapters and showcase their latest work, helping to drive the local industry forward.

By celebrating local talent and introducing it to a broader audience, the awards are set to become a cornerstone of Otakukon’s impact on the cultural landscape, both within Zimbabwe and on the international stage.

Announcement of Winners

The winners of the first edition of the Zimbabwe Manga and Comic Book Awards will be announced at Nakamarket on the 8th of December at Moto Republik. Tickets to Nakamarket, an experimental, first-of-its-kind market-based event by Otaku Konnect are already for sale via our social media pages. www.instagram.com/otakukonnect

Otakukon Brings Zimbabwe Anime Culture to Centre Stage

In August 2024, Zimbabwe’s pop culture scene experienced a defining moment with the second edition of the Otakukon Anime Festival. Hosted in Harare, this event marked a new era for anime enthusiasts and pop-culture lovers in the country, showcasing the incredible growth of the local anime community. As the largest anime convention in Zimbabwe, Otakukon has not only made a lasting impact locally but has also caught the attention of international media and audiences, cementing its place as a landmark cultural event.

The August 2024 edition of Otakukon was more than just a gathering of fans. It was a celebration of creativity, passion, and the growing influence of anime culture in Zimbabwe. With hundreds of attendees, from cosplayers to gamers and artists, the festival brought together diverse elements of pop culture under one roof, providing a platform for fans to connect, showcase their talents, and engage with their favorite anime franchises.

A Platform for Local Talent

One of the most significant impacts of Otakukon has been its ability to create opportunities for local talent. Through its Artist Alley, small business owners, many of them youth entrepreneurs, were given the chance to sell anime-inspired products and merchandise. The stalls featured everything from custom artwork and anime-themed clothing to handcrafted jewelry and collectibles. By creating a marketplace for creatives, Otakukon has not only fostered entrepreneurship but also helped showcase the depth of talent within Zimbabwe’s anime community.

Cosplay Competitions and Exhibitions

The heart of Otakukon’s appeal lies in its cosplay competitions and exhibitions, which have become a hallmark of the event. August’s festival saw the crowning of Gabriel Ota, who won the Zimbabwe Cosplay Championship with his portrayal of Jin Sakai from Ghost of Tsushima. The competition has become a highly anticipated feature, drawing attention from both participants and spectators. The detailed costumes, the artistry, and the passion behind the performances have elevated Zimbabwe’s cosplay scene, garnering praise both locally and internationally.

International Recognition

Otakukon’s reach has not been limited to Zimbabwe. The August 2024 festival received significant international coverage, including from Reuters and NHK Japan, highlighting how the festival is helping to put Zimbabwe’s anime culture on the global map. Following the event, Otakukon was featured in news outlets across several countries, including the UK, South Africa, China, and India. Digital and physical news outlets like Voice of Africa, WION, The Zimbabwean, and The Beijing Times. This international exposure has not only helped bring attention to Zimbabwe’s growing anime community but also underscored the country’s potential as a hub for creative talent in Africa.

The Road Ahead

With the success of the August 2024 edition, Otakukon is set to become a cornerstone of Zimbabwe’s cultural calendar. Plans are already in place for the next event in December, which is expected to attract even more attendees and greater international attention. The organizers have also hinted at exciting new partnerships and expanded programming, making future Otakukon events an even bigger platform for anime fans, gamers, cosplayers, and creators.

By continuing to shine a light on local talent and fostering an inclusive community for anime fans, Otakukon is not just a festival—it’s a movement. It’s bringing Zimbabwe’s anime culture to center stage, connecting local creatives to global audiences and helping the country establish itself as a key player in Africa’s growing pop-culture scene.

Otakukon’s rise reflects the growing passion for anime and pop culture in Zimbabwe, and with each event, it continues to build bridges between fans, creators, and the international anime community.

The Zimbabwe Cosplay Championship 2024, held at OTAKUKON Anime Festival 2024, was a landmark event in Zimbabwe’s anime and cosplay scene. This year, Gabriel Ota, also known as Ota Sensei, claimed victory after years of placing second in previous competitions. Known for his detailed and passionate portrayals, Ota Sensei’s win was especially notable as he cosplayed as Jin Sakai from the popular video game Ghost of Tsushima. His dedication and craftsmanship made him a standout in the 2024 championship, adding a new dimension to cosplay in Zimbabwe and across the African anime landscape.

A New Judging Process Elevates Cosplay Competitions

One of the major changes at this year’s event was the introduction of a professional judging process, replacing the traditional methods of crowd cheers or secret ballots. For the first time, cosplayers were evaluated based on detailed criteria by a panel of experts. The judges conducted in-depth interviews with the participants and thoroughly examined their costumes, focusing on craftsmanship, accuracy, and character portrayal.

This new approach provided a deeper appreciation for the dedication and skill required to bring these characters to life, marking a significant step forward for cosplay competitions in Africa. The change in format also underscored the growing professionalism in anime conventions in Africa, particularly at events like Otakukon.

Ota Sensei’s Victory as Jin Sakai

Gabriel Ota, or Ota Sensei, has long been a fan-favorite at Otakukon events, known for his elaborate and well-crafted cosplays. This year, he chose to embody Jin Sakai, the protagonist of the critically acclaimed video game Ghost of Tsushima. His portrayal was a true highlight of the competition, showcasing not only his expertise in costume design but also his ability to capture the essence of the character.

Ota Sensei’s Jin Sakai costume was an intricate blend of historical samurai armor and detailed weaponry, making it one of the most impressive cosplays of the competition. His commitment to accuracy and his portrayal of Jin Sakai’s stoic and honorable personality left both the judges and audience in awe. After several second-place finishes in past years, this performance finally earned him the top spot, cementing his reputation as one of Zimbabwe’s premier cosplayers.

Brother JA1400 Sewing Machine: The Grand Prize

As the 2024 Zimbabwe Cosplay Championship winner, Ota Sensei took home a Brother JA1400 sewing machine, generously provided by Otakukon and sponsor Brother. The prize is particularly meaningful in the cosplay community, as sewing machines are a fundamental tool for costume creation. For someone like Ota Sensei, who consistently produces intricate and high-quality cosplays, the machine will undoubtedly support his future projects and push the boundaries of his craft.

The inclusion of such a practical and valuable prize further highlights the growing support for cosplay in Zimbabwe from local and international sponsors. This not only encourages the growth of the community but also provides cosplayers with the resources they need to continue improving their skills.

A Milestone for Cosplay in Zimbabwe

The 2024 Zimbabwe Cosplay Championship marked a new chapter in the development of anime culture in Zimbabwe. By introducing a more rigorous judging system and recognizing outstanding craftsmanship, the event highlighted the immense talent within the cosplay community. Gabriel Ota’s victory as Jin Sakai serves as a testament to the creativity and skill that Zimbabwean cosplayers bring to the stage.

The future of cosplay competitions in Africa looks bright, with events like Otakukon continuing to provide platforms for cosplayers to showcase their talents. As Zimbabwe’s anime and cosplay scenes grow, the country is solidifying its place on the global stage, inspiring a new generation of cosplayers and anime enthusiasts across the continent.

Otakukon, Zimbabwe’s premier anime and gaming convention, made an exciting impact at the recently concluded Shoko Festival in Harare, adding a unique blend of gaming, cosplay, and creative workshops to the vibrant annual event. The convention participated on the second day of the festival as part of the Green Cities Expo, an initiative aimed at promoting sustainable urban living, and it brought something fresh to the festival: an interactive gaming experience and a cosplay prop-making masterclass. Otakukon’s involvement was in collaboration with Oxfam, Gaming Hub ZW, and Cosplay ZW, and it delivered a thrilling showcase that celebrated pop culture with a focus on creativity and collaboration. Having Otakukon at Shoko Festival 2024 was the collaboration we didn’t know we needed.

First Time Gaming Partnership

Otakukon’s gaming segment was one of the highlights of the day, offering festival-goers an immersive experience in the world of video games. In partnership with Gaming Hub ZW, the interactive gaming zone allowed participants to engage with popular titles and explore new ones, offering a much-needed dose of entertainment for both avid gamers and newcomers. The gaming experience was designed to be inclusive, featuring a mix of competitive and casual games, and it provided a space where attendees could connect, compete, and share in the joy of gaming.

For many at Shoko Festival, the gaming experience offered by Otakukon was a welcome escape into virtual worlds, providing a platform for Zimbabwe’s gaming community to showcase its talents and passions. The collaboration with Gaming Hub ZW also emphasized the growing importance of gaming culture in Zimbabwe, highlighting the potential for gaming as a tool for education, social connection, and even green advocacy, aligning with the broader goals of the Green Cities Expo.

A Cosplay Masterclass to Remember

Another major attraction was Otakukon’s cosplay prop-making masterclass, run in collaboration with Cosplay ZW. We we able to get the winner of the Zimbabwe Cosplay Championship, Ota_Sensei to come in to show us how to make a prop. As cosplay continues to grow in popularity across Zimbabwe, the masterclass offered festival-goers a rare opportunity to learn the intricate art of creating props and costumes. The class was designed to be hands-on, with participants getting the chance to craft their own props using sustainable materials, a nod to the environmental focus of the Green Cities Expo.

Led by local Gabriel Ota, the masterclass guided participants through the creative process, from concept to construction, demonstrating how everyday materials can be transformed into fantastic props for cosplayers. This session not only appealed to cosplay enthusiasts but also to anyone with an interest in DIY and creative expression. By incorporating an element of sustainability into the workshop, Otakukon and its collaborators underscored the importance of environmentally-conscious practices in creative industries. The masterclass included the making of Minato’s Kunai, a weapon from the Naruto-verse.

We thought this would be really easy, but most of the participants left with a greater respect for cosplayers and the level of detail required to actually put cosplayers together. Surprisingly, although the resources needed were easy to get, cardboard, tape and glue…it proved to be a huge challenge and we lost a lot of participants along the way. Only a handful were able to complete their kunai, the popular tik toker @Paulnc being one of them. We look forward to trying this again as it proved to be a great interactive process.

Collaboration with Oxfam and the Green Cities Expo

Otakukon’s participation was part of the larger Green Cities Expo, an initiative championed by Oxfam to promote sustainable urban development. Otakukon’s contributions aligned with the Expo’s theme by emphasizing the importance of eco-friendly practices in gaming and cosplay. From using recycled materials in cosplay prop-making to highlighting the growing potential of green gaming technology, Otakukon showed how pop culture can contribute to environmental advocacy.

The partnership with Oxfam also created a space for dialogue around how pop culture conventions like Otakukon can play a role in addressing sustainability challenges. The fusion of environmental awareness with gaming and cosplay at Shoko Festival offered a new perspective on how creative communities can support sustainable living in Zimbabwe’s urban centers.

This is the second year running that Otakukon has participated in the Green Cities Expo. We are very happy to be part of the larger conversation around how to increase awareness around recycling and upcycling through cosplay. Otakukon appreciates that anime is growing and cosplaying on a budget is something that appeals to a lot of people and we think marrying the two is a great opportunity. Ultimately, we will be looking ta ways to offer and better and more interactive and educational session if we get another chance to work with the team at Shoko Festival, Gaming Hub zw and Oxfam.

Conclusion

Otakukon’s presence at Shoko Festival’s Green Cities Expo was a resounding success, offering a dynamic mix of gaming, cosplay, and sustainability-focused activities. Additionally, through its collaborations with Oxfam, Gaming Hub ZW, and Cosplay ZW, Otakukon not only entertained festival-goers but also contributed to important conversations about sustainability and creativity. The event was a testament to the power of pop culture to inspire, educate, and bring communities together.

A Unique Experience for Advance Ticket Holders

As the anticipation for OTAKUKON Anime Festival 2024 builds, we are thrilled to introduce a special perk for all attendees who purchase their tickets in advance: customized tickets that feature their name, nickname, affiliated village, and class. This exciting new feature is designed to enhance the fan experience, adding a personal touch that immerses attendees even further into the world of anime and Japanese pop culture.

The Concept: A Ticket Like No Other

At OTAKUKON, we believe in making every aspect of our festival memorable, from the moment fans purchase their tickets to the final event. With this in mind, we have created a system where advance ticket holders receive a customized ticket that reflects their unique identity within the OTAKUKON universe. This ticket will not just be a pass to the event but a keepsake that fans can cherish long after the festival is over.

Each customized ticket will include the following elements:

Name: The ticket will feature the attendee’s full name, allowing them to feel personally connected to the event.

Nickname: Whether it’s a fan nickname, a favorite character’s name, or a self-chosen alias, this is where attendees can express their individuality. The nickname will be prominently displayed, adding a fun and personalized touch to the ticket.

Affiliated Village: Drawing inspiration from this year’s theme and the popular anime “Naruto,” where characters belong to different ninja villages, attendees will choose an affiliated village that resonates with their interests, character and ambition This affiliation will be printed on their ticket, adding to the sense of belonging and camaraderie among fans.

Class: The class designation on the ticket corresponds to the ticket tier purchased. For example, “Genin” for standard tickets, “jonin” for SuperFan tickets, and “Anbu” for Cosplay tickets. This classification not only reflects the attendee’s status at the festival but also ties into the overall theme of OTAKUKON 2024.

Why Personalization Matters

We get that personalization has become an essential aspect of fan engagement in today’s event landscape. By offering customized tickets, we aim to make all our advance ticket attendees feel like the valued member of the OTAKUKON community that they are. This level of personalization transforms a simple entry pass into a meaningful and interactive part of our festival experience.

Moreover, the customized tickets serve as a physical reminder of the attendee’s unique place within the OTAKUKON universe. Fans often treasure these mementos, and with their name, nickname, village, and class emblazoned on the ticket, it becomes a collectible item that we hope fans will want to keep as a souvenir.

The Process: How to Get Your Customized Ticket

To receive a customized ticket, attendees simply need to purchase their tickets in advance through the official OTAKUKON website or authorized outlets. During the purchase process, they will be prompted to provide their name, choose a nickname, select their affiliated village, and choose their ticket tier. This information will then be used to create their personalized ticket, which will be available for pick-up at the event.

For those who may not purchase in advance, regular tickets will still be available at the door. However, these tickets will not have the same personalized elements, making the advance purchase a truly unique opportunity.

The Benefits of Advance Purchase

In addition to the personalized ticket, advance ticket holders will enjoy other benefits such as expedited entry to the event, access to exclusive content and merchandise. These perks, combined with the excitement of holding a ticket that is uniquely theirs, make advance purchase the best way to experience OTAKUKON Anime Festival 2024.

Conclusion: Join the OTAKUKON Experience

As we prepare for OTAKUKON Anime Festival 2024, we are excited to offer this personalized ticket experience to our dedicated fans. It’s more than just a ticket—it’s a gateway into a world where every attendee is a hero in their own right, part of a vibrant community of anime lovers.
OTAKUKON Anime Festival, Zimbabwe’s first and only convention dedicated to anime, manga, and Japanese pop culture, is more than just a gathering for fans. It is a vibrant platform that offers significant opportunities for small creative businesses to thrive. From planned initiatives to actual impacts, OTAKUKON is poised to play a pivotal role in fostering economic growth within the creative sector.

Planned and Intended Impacts

When OTAKUKON was conceived, one of its primary goals was to create a supportive environment for small creative businesses. Recognizing the growing interest in anime and manga within Zimbabwe, the festival was designed to serve as a marketplace where artists, crafters, and vendors could showcase their talents and products. By providing a dedicated space for these businesses, OTAKUKON aims to help them reach new customers and expand their markets. We watched as we grew from just 4 vendors at the first event to 12 unique merchants and artists by December 2023. We were more excited about how many anime-based businesses popped up after the first two OTAKUKON events. A testament that our existence showed that there was a market and that we could give access to it.

The festival’s planned initiatives include a variety of activities focused on promoting small businesses. Workshops and panels led by industry professionals offer invaluable insights into the creative process, marketing strategies, and business development. These sessions are intended to equip entrepreneurs with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in a competitive market. Additionally, OTAKUKON aims to foster networking opportunities, allowing small business owners to connect with potential partners, collaborators, and customers.

The Marketplace: A Hub for Creativity and Commerce

One of the standout features of OTAKUKON is its bustling marketplace. This area is a hub of activity where vendors can sell a wide range of products, including handmade crafts, unique artwork, custom cosplay accessories, and anime-themed merchandise. By offering a physical space for transactions, the marketplace provides small businesses with a direct channel to their target audience—anime and manga enthusiasts who are eager to support local creators.

For many vendors, OTAKUKON represents a significant opportunity to gain exposure and build brand recognition. The festival attracts a diverse crowd, including dedicated fans and casual attendees who may be discovering anime culture for the first time. This diversity enhances the potential for small businesses to reach a broad spectrum of customers, increasing their chances of making sales and securing repeat business.

Actual Impacts: Success Stories from the Community

Since its inception, OTAKUKON has already begun to make a tangible impact on the local creative economy. Small businesses that participated in the inaugural event reported increased visibility and sales. For instance, local artists who showcased their work at the festival saw a significant boost in their social media followings and received commissions from new clients. Vendors selling handmade merchandise noted a surge in demand, with many selling out of their products by the end of the event.

The festival has also fostered a sense of community among small business owners. By bringing together like-minded individuals, OTAKUKON has created a supportive network where entrepreneurs can share experiences, exchange ideas, and collaborate on future projects. This sense of camaraderie has been instrumental in helping small businesses navigate the challenges of the market and find new pathways to success.

Looking Ahead: Future Growth and Expansion

As OTAKUKON continues to grow, its impact on small creative businesses is expected to expand as well. Future editions of the festival will build on the success of previous years, introducing new initiatives designed to further support and promote local talent. Plans include expanding the marketplace to accommodate more vendors, offering advanced workshops on business development, and creating additional networking opportunities.

Moreover, OTAKUKON aims to explore digital avenues to complement its physical events. By leveraging online platforms, the festival can provide continuous support to small businesses throughout the year, extending their reach beyond the confines of the event itself.

Conclusion

OTAKUKON Anime Festival is more than just a celebration of Japanese pop culture; it is a powerful engine for economic growth within Zimbabwe’s creative sector. By providing a marketplace for small businesses, fostering networking opportunities, and offering educational resources, OTAKUKON helps local entrepreneurs reach new heights. As the festival continues to evolve, its positive impact on small creative businesses is set to grow, making it an indispensable part of the local economy and a beacon of hope for aspiring artists and vendors.

Cosplay, a portmanteau of “costume” and “play,” has become a vibrant subculture within the global fan communities of anime, manga, video games, and comics. This creative hobby, where enthusiasts dress up as their favorite characters, offers more than just entertainment and a means of expression. After our first 3 events, we began leveraging the medium to promote conversations about important issues such as recycling, upcycling, and environmental stewardship. This is our story so far about how we believe cosplay can be a powerful tool for raising awareness and encouraging sustainable practices.

The Intersection of Cosplay and Environmentalism

Cosplay, at its core, is about creativity and transformation. It involves crafting costumes, accessories, and props, often from scratch or repurposed materials. This aspect of cosplay naturally aligns with the principles of recycling and upcycling. By reusing materials that might otherwise be discarded, cosplayers can reduce waste and minimize their environmental footprint.

Moreover, our budding cosplay community is characterized by a mix of strong DIY ethic and cosplays that are ordered. Many cosplayers take pride in making their costumes by hand, saving money and allowing for a personal connection to the craft. This do-it-yourself approach can be extended to environmental practices, where cosplayers learn to appreciate the value of materials and the benefits of repurposing. For most Zimbabweans accessibility is a major contributor to the push for cosplays made from scratch; it’s not as easy to order a cosplay and sometimes it’s just not affordable.

Promoting Recycling Through Cosplay

Recycling is a fundamental aspect of environmental conservation, and cosplay can play a significant role in promoting this practice. Many cosplayers already engage in recycling by using second-hand items, such as old clothing, accessories, or household items, to create their costumes. This not only saves money but also gives new life to otherwise discarded materials.

As OTAKUKON we plan to further encourage recycling by hosting workshops and panels that teach cosplayers how to source materials sustainably. These sessions will cover topics like choosing eco-friendly fabrics, using non-toxic paints, and repurposing household items into costume props. By providing this knowledge, cosplay events can help attendees make more environmentally conscious choices.

Our first foray into such workshops was in a mini-event we held in partnership with Magamba Network‘s Shoko Festival last year. We challenged two previous winners from our cosplay competitions to make upcycled cosplays within 30 days. They did not disappoint. On top of hoping that the program becomes a recurring event, we would like to contribute more to climate issues in a way only we can.

Upcycling in Cosplay: Creativity Meets Sustainability

Upcycling, the process of transforming waste materials into new, high-quality products, is a perfect fit for cosplay. The imaginative nature of costume design often requires unique and creative solutions, making upcycling a natural choice. Cosplayers can turn old or unused items into intricate costumes and props, showcasing their creativity while promoting sustainability.

For example, a cosplayer might use old plastic bottles to create armor or accessories or turn cardboard boxes into detailed weaponry. By doing so, they not only reduce the demand for new materials but also highlight the potential of upcycling to others. We have seen this practice can be particularly impactful when cosplayers share their upcycled creations at our events or when others see them online. It really does a good job of inspiring others to adopt similar practices.

Moreover, upcycling allows for the creation of unique and one-of-a-kind costumes that stand out in a crowd. This uniqueness can be a powerful motivator, as cosplayers often seek to differentiate themselves through their craft. By embracing upcycling, they can create distinctive costumes that also carry a message of sustainability.

Raising Environmental Awareness Through Themed Cosplay

Cosplay can also be a medium for raising awareness about environmental issues directly. Some cosplayers and event organizers have started to integrate environmental themes into their costumes and events. For example, costumes based on characters who are protectors of nature or themed events focused on environmental sustainability can draw attention to these critical issues.

One creative example is cosplayers dressing as “eco-warrior” versions of their favorite characters, incorporating recycled or upcycled materials into their costumes. These eco-friendly adaptations can be visually striking and serve as conversation starters, encouraging others to think about how their hobbies and lifestyles impact the environment.

We aim to support these initiatives by frequently hosting themed competitions or exhibitions that highlight environmentalism. For instance, while our DIY category in our cosplay competition doesn’t always request costumes made from recycled materials we tend to see most of them be made from such materials. Over time we would like to award special prizes for the most innovative use of upcycled items. This will help OTAKUKON to not only promote sustainability within the cosplay community but also educate the public about the importance of environmental stewardship.

The Role of Social Media in Spreading the Message

Social media is a powerful tool for spreading awareness about cosplay and environmentalism. OTAKUKON and our cosplayers often share these magnificent creations on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, reaching a global audience. By showcasing their sustainable practices and upcycled costumes, they can inspire others to consider the environmental impact of their hobbies and everyday lives.

We believe that influencers and well-known cosplayers will be able to play a crucial role in this movement by advocating for sustainability within the community. By sharing tutorials on making eco-friendly costumes or discussing the importance of recycling, they can set trends that others follow. Moreover, social media challenges, such as creating a costume entirely from recycled materials, can engage the community and spread the message further. This is our goal.

Challenges and Opportunities

While the integration of environmentalism into cosplay is promising, it also comes with challenges. Not all materials are easily recyclable or upcyclable, and some costume designs may require specific materials that are not environmentally friendly. Additionally, we have seen a lack of awareness and resources available to cosplayers who want to pursue sustainable practices. Some specialist tools and skills are required to be able to start doing that, with the most popular being sewing.

However, these challenges also present opportunities. The cosplay community is known for its creativity and innovation, traits that are invaluable in overcoming these hurdles. By working together, cosplayers can develop new techniques and solutions that prioritize sustainability without compromising on creativity or quality.

As the cosplay community becomes more aware of environmental issues, we see potential for partnerships with environmental organizations and companies that offer eco-friendly materials and products. We also see partnerships with organizations that have the same mission as us, albeit with different methods. These collaborations can provide resources and support for cosplayers looking to make a positive impact.

Conclusion

Cosplay is a dynamic and creative hobby that has the potential to significantly influence conversations around recycling, upcycling, and environmental care. We have seen cosplay become an integral part of the OTAKUKON community in just a year and believe it has the potential for more impact as it is not limited by accessibility to events. By embracing sustainable practices and using their platform to raise awareness, cosplayers can make a meaningful impact on both their community and the broader public. As the cosplay community continues to grow and evolve, it can serve as a model for how hobbies and entertainment can intersect with important social and environmental issues, driving change and inspiring others to think more sustainably.

Thank you for coming on this journey with us over the past year. We are a few days away from marking a year from the date we held our first ever anime-focused event. Ever since then it has been a great story of growth and community. Thanks largely to your support and attendance we have been able to keep this event going.

Going into 2024, we would like our event to be a little bit more than just a gathering of anime, manga and Japanese pop-culture fans. We want OTAKUKON events to evolve into an experience that you can’t tell anyone about. We would like OTAKUKON to be an experience you can only feel! For this to happen we need to see growth in various segments of our main sub-communities: Cosplay and Gaming are our focuses for 2024.

If you would like to help us achieve these goals and make OTAKUKON better, join our patreon community where we will be able to give exclusive value to our members. While paid members will be the best way to help us grow, we appreciate all forms of membership on our patreon.
